I am a retired social anthropologist, having taught at Swansea University from September 1968 until the end of August 2008. I first carried out research in Greece in 1966-67 for a doctoral thesis, and have continued the association with the island, the islanders, and the migrants to Athens, ever since. The different pieces of research are detailed separately in the ‘Research Pages’ section.
Click on each of the Research headings to get a sample of photos from that research and also - for most - a downloadable pdf of a paper from that research
My main fields of interest include kinship, ritual, migration and tourism. I have written two books and many articles about my research. The books are: Greek Island Life: Fieldwork on Anafi (2001), republished in a second edition by Sean Kingston in 2017; and The Social Organisation of Exile: Greek Political Detainees in the 1930s (2001), which is based on the finding of glass and celluloid negatives showing the lives of political exiles on Anafi. The second book was translated into Greek, with some new information, in 2004, by Alexandreia Press in Athens. Most of the journal publications can be found on the websites www.academia.edu and www.researchgate.net but there are also some downloadable pdfs linked to each Research section. A full bibliography is also attached to this website.
I was involved in writing a chapter for a volume about Anafi published by the Academy of Athens (mostly in Greek) and featuring the work on the island of the folklorist Stefanos Imellos (see bibliography).
I have also written four booklets, privately printed, and only available on the island, for sale in tourist shops. These are: A Brief Guide (also translated into Greek); Anafi: Island of Exile; Folklore and Traditions of Anafi; Traditional Embroideries of Anafi.
