In late December 2006 I was diagnosed with breast cancer, so the next year was taken up with an operation, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. All this without any payment at all, on the NHS. My Greek friends were amazed: 'Even the WIG was free!'
I decided that after 40 years at Swansea University it was time to retire. I was then offered a Visiting Fellowship at the British School at Athens, from February 2009 (arriving just in time for Apokreas - the festival season before Great Lent begins). This visit gave me the opportunity to carry out further research, and to prepare to donate my collection of negatives and prints of Anafi and the Athenian migrants from 1966 onwards to the Benaki Photographic Archive. I published several articles about this. One of these is 'The present becomes the past..' in the Benaki Museum Journal 2008 pp 123-136, downloadable here.
