Ploughing was done by donkeys, mules, or cattle. Seed was sown by hand. Harvesting was carried out with sickles; threshing took place on a circular aloni, threshing floor, and then winnowed in a light breeze to separate the grain from the chaff. Grain would often be stored in country cottages and taken into the village a few sacks at a time. Before being taken to a flour mill, grain was cleaned by hand. Women, particularly sisters living near each other, would often cooperate in baking bread for their two households.
