1966 Res 1A b Olives

It was mostly women who picked and sorted olives, being paid in an agreed amount of oil. The olives were transported to a press, crushed on a circular platform by a heavy stone pulled round by a donkey. The crushed olives were put into goats-hair sacks, placed onr on top of another in the press, and then a captan was turned by four people  to push a weight down onto the sacks. The oil ran into a trough and was then ladled into cans to be measured, with the press keeping 10%.
